WHAT CHOICES SHOULD WE MAKE?
Health care today confronts us with a huge number of confusing questions. While science has provided us with miracle drugs and machines that prolong our lives, it has also presented us with many ethical dilemmas, crushing costs and a myriad of decisions regarding treatment and end-of-life decisions. We all face tough questions that need answers:

:: How can everyone have fair access to medical care?

:: How should resources be allocated for organ transplants?

:: Who should speak for you if you can't speak for yourself regarding such issues as treatment and life support?

:: What adjustments should be made in the Oregon Health Plan's Medicaid Program?

:: What are the issues surrounding physician assisted death?

:: How can you make our policy makers hear your voice and understand your health care values?

HOW CAN OHD HELP?
OHD responds to current health care concerns through:

:: Publications such as Making Health Care Decisions When You Can't Speak for Yourself -A Summary of Oregon's Advance Directive Law

:: Organizing community meetings statewide that help Oregonians look at current health care reform and technology issues.

:: Conducting periodic surveys and focus group meetings to gather information regarding values and opinions and making those values known to policy makers.

PROVEN RESULTS
OHD has become a national model for citizen participation in critical health policy issues. In 1990, our report, Health Care in Common, a compilation of input from 47 community meetings played a vital role in the Health Services Commission's setting of priorities for health services in Oregon. OHD helped lead the way for defining a basic and effective level of services for both government and employer provided health insurance. OHD provided the leadership to help establish American Health Decisions, a growing coalition of over 20 state health decision organizations dedicated to strengthening grass roots movements throughout the country. Our projects have been supported by many prestigious national foundations including: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Prudential Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Oregon Community Foundation, AARP, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and the Meyer Memorial Trust.
